It is sometimes difficult to know exactly when to file for Social Security Disability benefits. This is because in order to qualify for benefits you must have a disability that has lasted or is expected to last at least one year.
In many instances, an accident or injury occurs but the severity of the injury and/or duration of the disability is unknown.
If there is even a possibility that the disability will last a year and could meet the Social Security Administration’s criteria, it could never hurt to file an application for benefits.
More often than not, applications are filed at a later date as it can take several months for the claimant to realize that he or she is going to be out of work for much longer than expected.
